So you might think coming from England and moving to London Ontario, that language would not be a problem. However, much to my surprise, this was the case.
Yes, we speak the same language, but the meaning of some words are totally different.
I remember speaking clearly to people and they would blankly look at me, and it was then that I knew I had said something they didn’t understand.
Sometimes it was words I had used all my life, that didn’t need an explanation as far as I was concerned, but I found myself in a position where I would have to. I also found that I had to slow my speech down to be fully understood.
On the other hand, I have seen people melt when I speak, as they love my Birmingham accent. It’s opened several doors for me in the real estate market in London Ontario, as someone always has a family member from the UK.
For example, when I say I am going on vacation for a fortnight (no, not the game) I tend to get a blank look, but when I say I’m going on vacation for two weeks, the light bulb comes on.
So even though there’s so many things in common between London England and London Ontario, such as street names and historic buildings, the differences are quite noticeable. But thankfully, London Ontario’s real estate market is quite affordable compared to London England’s.
The real estate market has really heated up in the last little while, but many say it’s really an overall market adjustment as London has been a great bargain for a very long time.
